Accounting Company Helps Business Owners
The staff at Accounting Professionals includes Mark, left, Owner Mike, and Robert.
By: Ashley
Mike started a business called Accounting Professionals in the heart of (hometown) in March 2006, with the intent of helping small- to medium-sized businesses with their accounting needs.
Mike said his wife grew up in (hometown), and moving there was like coming home for him as well. It is a great place to raise their three kids, and run the accounting business.
He received his bachelor’s degree in finance from Brigham Young University, and has been in the accounting field for six years, he said.
Before coming to (hometown), Mike worked for a construction company in Colorado, and when he decided to move to Utah and start his own business, they asked him to continue doing their accounting.
He said this allowed him to start his business with a base. There are a few other companies in Colorado he also does accounting for. He goes back there about once a year, but most of his communication with those companies is by phone and e-mail.
However, he can cater his service to whatever a business owner needs. He meets with some of his clients weekly, and is very flexible and accessible, he said.
Mike answers his own phone and can communicate regularly through phone, e-mail, or in person. He wants to do whatever the customer is most comfortable with, he said.
He said his focus is on taking care of businesses that are generally not large enough to hire personnel to do their accounting, but still need help. Hiring an employee involves a lot of expense, and until a company grows to a certain point, it can frequently be more efficient to use an accounting business.
Mike is very familiar with the laws, deadlines, deductions, and other things that can be confusing, he said. He can help give the business owners direction, and handle the accounting side.
Some business owners are frustrated by the financial end of the business, and struggle to compile everything when it comes to tax time. He said he can help the business owners who have a shoebox full of receipts and spend a lot of time trying to figure it out on their own.
His business’s goal is to help people simplify things, and help keep them on the right track legally so they can direct more of their attention toward the parts of their company they are experts at, he said.
“My desire is to help them be able to focus on their business,” Mike said.
He said a lot of people think they could never afford an accountant, but he has established an efficient business system and passes on his savings to the customer.
“I consider my business to provide a very affordable solution,” he said.
His customers can pick and choose the accounting services they need, and pay for just those.
Mike and his two employees do everything from payroll, job cost accounting, accounts payable and accounts receivable, to Quickbooks training, collections and bad debt reduction, and taxes.
Mike said it is also important to him to help things make sense for his customers. There can be a lot of confusing accounting jargon, and he can help explain it. He wants to work with them and apply the accounting to their business, instead of trying to apply their business to the accounting.
Sometimes it feels like the government is trying to make it harder on small business owners, with frequent new and confusing laws and regulations, he said, but his business is to keep on top of and make sense of those kinds of things.
He said he gets satisfaction from helping small business owners with the bookkeeping burden and giving them the extra time to devote to other things.

Relaxin' at the beach

Joey was so low-key the whole trip. It was much less of a bother having him at the beach than I would have imagined.
Last week was another fun adventure for our family. We left late Friday night and arrived in Primm, NV (state line) at about midnight. We weren't interested in waiting around for the long check-in line, so we kept driving to Baker, ate some gyros at Mad Greek, found no open motel and kept driving to Barstow where the 10th hotel we checked had an availability. The next door room was partying just as hard as they were in Primm so... we didn't get much sleep that night. I told Mike it was the worst night of my life and he said I've had worse.

We got to see granda H and stay with her Saturday night. The accomodations were a billion times better and the hospitality was exceptional.

We arrived at the BEACH on Monday! We enjoyed having family around and getting to talk with them (at times when we weren't over-occupied rounding up our kids). Thanks to Cheryl and Erin, our local experts, for taking us to some fun waves for the little kids one of the days. The others days we spent swimming and playing on the sand. It's so fun to hear the kids talk about the reunion. This morning, out of the blue, Adelyn said, "Seth is so fun to play in the water with. He's a good swimmer." Michael also fondly recalls getting "nailed" by a wave when he was out boogie boarding with Mike. Thankfully, the beach has brought him to life, so to speak, and he no longer believes he is immortal when it comes to water.

We had a grand time, and will make the beach a frequent travel spot for our family. It seemed to fit our M.O. to a T.
This was better than playing in the dirt for Michael.
Seth with Michael, Alissa with Adelyn. Seth helped her enjoy the waves more than I thought she would.
I didn't get one single picture that wasn't blurry in one place or another. These two are wiggle worms.

This is Mike and the boys preparing table decorations, er ice sculptures for dinner one night.

More of the drive

Since 1/2 of the 4 day trip was driving, we had to make it enjoyable. Here's some great examples from our drive (excluding the rainbow, which was highlight #1).
Highlight #2- There is always a lot of police officers on the way down. This is our favorite officer. If you can't see his face, click on the picture to make it larger. If you can't see his body, it's because he doesn't have one.
Highlight#3- Giving the kids a chance to babysit in the backseat. For the first time, Michael has enough patience to feed a whole bottle to Joey. I realize Michael is not clothed in the picture. I think there was a reason for that.
Highlight #4- Exploring while the baby gets fed. It's always nice to get out of the car every once in a while.

Hot Time in the Ol' Town!

We typically don't choose to visit Phoenix in the very middle of summer; our bodies are not quite ready for the sudden adjustment to heat. Only for very special occasions to we deter from our family pact: Welcome home Mark!
We also got to meet baby Samuel. Joey, this will probably be the last time you are bigger than him. Hopefully our tall genes will kick in eventually, but neither Adelyn or Michael have experienced as much growth as any of the cousins.
Even though our camera was running low on batteries, I had to snap a picture of Adelyn. She was enthralled with Uncle Don's storytelling. I think this is the part where the nurse was running her fingers through his hair to check for lice.

Backyard Bliss

When we purchased our house, I never could have dreamed the backyard would be a place we could enjoy- it was disgusting. When we had a puppy, I never dreamed the backyard would be a place we could enjoy. But, Mike put in some hard work days and built some planters for the backyard, and we put in a little garden. This year we have strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, cabbage, tomatoes, yellow squash and zucchini. Everything but the cabbage looks remarkable and I am so happy with the finished product. Today I saw Michael chowing down on a raw zucchini he had picked. Now that's bliss!

The Drive

We recently got back from a trip to Phoenix, and before I sort through all my pictures, I had to post a picture from the drive home. It was one of the most beautiful scenes I have ever seen. As we were coming around the bend to a scenic lookout spot, we saw a completely full rainbow, so big it wouldn't all fit in the camera. It was bright, but faded just a few minutes after we rounded the bend. This lookout spot is already a favorite on our drive, but this made it about one billion times more miraculous.

Results 1 - 10 of about 731,000 for cell phone through washing machine. (0.20 seconds)

"Believe it or not, you're not alone. It has been estimated that about 2,160 different people put their cell phone through the wash in a single day." How good to know I am 1 of 2,160. But tips from the Internet and tips from Carole, who I remember being able to save her phone from a similar disaster, did not help me. My phone appears to be dead. Luckily I wasn't the only one to leave care aside. While Mike was giving my cell phone a rubbing alcohol bath, a little bit got on the kitchen table and dissolved the finish in a couple spots. Whoops!

Who says who have to celebrate your birthday on your birthday?

As much as I prefer celebrating my birthday on the REAL day, it was kind of nice to spoil Mike for his 1/2 birthday this year. Since his birthday is on New Years Eve, somebody else is usually in charge of the party/food and we are usually out of town so it's hard to spoil him. This year we had a party on June 30th complete with cake, decorations, birthday breakfast, birthday dinner and his very own choice of birthday activity. We went fishing up to forebay (a few miles from our house). It was a beautiful night. Here's some quick pictures.

Independence- from the kids for an hour

Since Adelyn, Michael and Joey rode in the parade with grandma and grandpa, Mike got to take me for a ride on the scooter (we were also in the parade). This is only time #2 that I've been so fortunate. The first time, Joey was only 5 or 6 weeks old and we left my 9-year-old brother with the kids to go get some bread at the grocery store. Of course we broke down, and it took longer than expected. Sorry to J for making him a little nervous (and yes, I know you're 10 now, but you were only 9 then).
So, the "hometown" scooter club is born. I was a little worried that maybe people would actually take us seriously and want to join, "then what would we do Mike?" We'd start a club! And have scooter rallies! And make an official club patch to wear on our scooter jackets! ...and a handful of recruits are already signing up. Really. We probably tripled our membership in one day. I'm pretty sure if this is going to work, I'm going to need my own scooter, but Mike is hesitant. He must know he looks better with a girl on the back.
